NEPEAN DIAGNOSTICS

fine needle aspiration or core biopsy

What is a Fine Needle Aspiration or Core Biopsy?

This procedure is designed to obtained a small specimen of tissue to send to a Pathologist, in order to determine if there is an abnormality. This is done under imaging guidance, either ultrasound or CT, to ensure the specimen is taken from the correct location and to minimise any risk of injury to sensitive tissues. This keeps any potential complications as low as possible.

The procedure will be explained in detail by the specialist and a consent form signed. The procedure will be carried out with as much care as possible, using best sterile technique to minimise risk of infection. Local anaesthetic will be administered when necessary to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
